I couldn't afford at the time, I was 15, so after my license came in the mail I borrowed one, an Icom IC-2AT, and made my first two contacts, one on simplex, 147.555 from the roof of my parents' house, and another on a repeater, the Baltimore Radio Amateur Television Society's 147.03. The exam was at a ham radio store called the Maryland Radio Outlet, now long gone, like many local radio shops. The technician exam, I took in Laurel, Maryland, so I'm going to assume it was the Laurel VEC. One of the guys who gave me the test has a very memorable call sign, and I still catch him on the air now and then, even though I've moved across the state. Going way back, I took my novice exam and I don't think it was a VEC, if I recall, it was just two generals that could give the exam, but I'm not 100% on that. I think the ARRL is the only one that really operates nation wide, others are more regional. I have some experimenting to do with WXtoImg yet, but it looks promising.

I also had the additional 3m of coax in series with the antenna and the SDR. I followed the directions here to set the orientation and element length. I was also surprised that the $10 antenna kit worked as well as it did. The horizontal static was where I adjusted the center frequency in GQRX to track the doppler shift. However, when it was 18's turn it came almost right overhead, and I was pretty happy with this resulting image. The usual quirky things like passing audio between programs properly caused some headaches. I spent probably 3 or 4 hours over the day messing with tools and missing passes that weren't far above the horizon. WXtoImg for decoding the demodulated FM.gpredict for timing the approach and flight path of the satellites.GQRX for interfacing with the SDR and demodulating the FM signal. After several unsuccessful tries, I finally snagged this image of Lake Superior off of NOAA 18 on 137.9125MHz. I passed my tech and general last week and thought I'd give my new RTL-SDR a try while waiting for the wheels of bureaucracy to turn. r/amateursatellites/ - Satellite weather RX /r/Amsat - Amateur Radio Satellites
